Chronic / Venous Oedemas

What causes chronic and venous oedemas?

Chronic and venous oedemas are often due to a high output failure – that is, the body is unable to effectively move and return fluid centrally resulting in (typically) lower limb oedemas. Common causes of this type of swelling include chronic venous insufficiency, dependency/positional oedema, obesity related oedema and other systemic causes such as congestive heart failure, renal disease and hepatic disease.

Chronic and venous oedemas will often lead to changes in skin condition as well as the presence of ulcers and complex wounds if not managed. The goal of therapy is to reduce swelling in the affected limb and to optimise the condition of the skin. At Allied Therapy Network we utilise techniques such as massage, bandaging and garment prescription to support the management of chronic and venous oedemas. We are also able to provide comprehensive nursing support from our on-site clinical nurse to manage the presence of wounds and other skin conditions.
